Dermot is a graduate of Galway University (BComm / LLB Hons), subsequently completing postgraduate studies (LL.M in Advanced Legal Practice) at Northumbria University.
After spells in the Manchester offices of corporate boutique Turner Parkinson and national firm Freeths, Dermot relocated to the North East in early 2011. He was elected to the TVLS Council in July 2012.
Specialising in general business law, Dermot’s practice area encompasses commercial contracts, commercial property, transactional banking, partnerships, business sales / acquisitions and company secretarial matters. He has lectured on aspects of company and consumer law and is a recognised annual contributor to the World Bank ‘Doing Business’ report.
Dermot is a keen advocate of alternate dispute resolution and is dual-qualified as a Commercial Mediator.
Outside of legal practice, Dermot enjoys music (he is a member of the Richmond Classical Guitar Society), sport (watching), and practising advanced negotiation skills with his son.
