Law Society Welcomes New President

Law Society Welcomes New President

Bolton-based solicitor Joe Egan has been inaugurated as the 173rd president of the Law Society of England and Wales. Joe, who succeeds outgoing president Robert Bourns, is a past president of the Bolton Law Society, and representative for solicitors in Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

It is a great honour to take up the role of president of the Law Society, said Mr Egan, I look forward to the task of continuing to promote the outstanding work that solicitors do throughout England and Wales.

Every single day solicitors oil the wheels of justice and business in our country, and we have much to be proud of.

The Law Society has an important role to play in this, representing the views of the solicitor profession to government, and providing a huge range of support to help solicitors get on with their job.

We also have a vital public interest role. Most, if not all of us, came into the profession to ensure that people could exercise their rights, and I intend to continue to stand up tirelessly for access to justice.

The new president has set five priorities for his year in office:

  • Maintaining continuity within the Law Society and the support it offers to solicitors
  • Promoting the solicitor profession at home and abroad, including the development of a Local Law Society manual
  • Leading the Law Society's Global Legal Cente campaign - promoting the profession and jurisdiction as the leading centre for legal services
  • Promoting access to justice
  • Advancing social mobility in the solicitor profession

Paying tribute to his predecessor, the new president said: Robert Bourns has been president during an extraordinary period of flux both for the country and for the legal sector and he has shown exemplary leadership for the profession and the Law Society. I'm honoured to follow him. On behalf of the whole solicitor profession I offer him our thanks for his dedicated service.

Also taking office were Christina Blacklaws and Simon Davis who became vice president and deputy vice president (respectively) of the Law Society.
